On October 19, 2017, ten BGA juniors, accompanied by Mr. Kevin McCarthy, volunteered at TASK (Trenton Area Soup Kitchen) for the second time this school year. The students served approximately 250 lunches at the soup kitchen.
Before leaving, at the pre-soup kitchen prayer and gathering, Sister Cynthia reminded the adult and student volunteers that God provides us with His radical generosity. This not only comes through His endless mercy but through the people we meet. Sister Cynthia put it best; “Be the face of God to someone and they may be the face of God to you.” Sister challenged the volunteers to be the face of God to the patrons at TASK and to provide God’s radical generosity to them.
Here are some of the comments from the juniors that describe how they provided God’s radical generosity at TASK:
Martin said: “I showed generosity by handing out drinks to people, talking to some people, and getting to see them have a good meal and smile.”
Charli explained: “I was in charge of serving desserts and I made sure to make all of them evenly distributed. Seeing how thankful the patrons were was very rewarding.”
Rohan described: “My role in showing God’s generosity to the less fortunate was handing out bread items. The patrons were so happy to be served and made the experience truly worthwhile.”
Hailey shared: “I was able to help serve the food trays to the guests and greet them good morning. It made my day to know that the visitors had a great start to the day with a good meal.
Gabriella said: “My job today in showing generosity was cutting vegetables. It was such a great feeling knowing I was able to help prepare a meal for someone less fortunate than me.”
Nico wrote: “Today my job was putting salads into each plate. I was excited that I met some of the people who run TASK and it was such a great feeling to know that people were able to eat a good meal.”
Allison shared: “My job today was placing fruits on the trays. It made me feel good that I provided them a meal and I believe it made them feel good as well! I’m glad I was able to help them and I hope all of the people who were there today find peace, love, and happiness.”
Kyle described: “My job today was to cut and wrap all different types of vegetables for the chefs. During the process of chopping all the different vegetables, it gave me a sense of relief to know that the donated foods were giving someone the chance to have a good meal that they do not always get to enjoy.”
Trisha explained: “Today I had a chance to wrap cookies and serve rice in the assembly line. It felt good knowing I was putting food on their plate. Everyone was very friendly and I can’t wait to do it again!”
Morgan shared: “During my time at TASK, I had the opportunity to meet a woman who offered me a nickel after I served her food. While a nickel might not seem like much, I knew it was a lot for her to give. I’d love to help again in the future!”
It was another wonderful opportunity to help those in need at TASK!
