Spirited Competition Highlights 19th Annual Grammar School Competition
Posted on 11/06/2017
On November 6, 2017, the 19th annual Grammar School Competition was held at Bishop Ahr High School, a place where students can grasp a true sense of community, especially through spiritual, creative, academic, athletic, and social experiences.

Twelve grammar schools from the Diocese of Metuchen came together to be challenged by various scholastic and athletic competitions. Those schools included: Assumption Catholic School, Holy Savior Academy, Immaculate Conception School, Perth Amboy Catholic School, St. Ambrose School, St. Bartholomew School, St. Helena School, St. James School, St. John Vianney School, St. Joseph School, St. Matthew School, and St. Matthias School.

The competition was organized by Campus Minister Sr. Cynthia Babyak, Athletic Director Mr. Michael Wolfthal, Associate Principal Mr. Harry Ziegler, Assistant Campus Minister Mr. John Roche, and many BGAHS faculty, staff, and student ambassadors who volunteered their time to assist with the activities.

To begin the program, the BGAHS Select Chorus led the group in prayer with the song “Be Still and Know that I am God.” The grammar school students, teachers, and parents were treated to some musical numbers performed by the chorus such as the ever-popular “Big House” and “Trading My Sorrows.” Everyone joined in the singing and dancing!   The BGAHS Greater Middlesex County championship-winning cheerleaders performed a spirited routine.

Included in the competition were six individual contests: a small-scale version of the popular Jeopardy TV show; some problem-solving activities; a dramatic arts project; athletic activities, a forensic science challenge, and a spelling bee.  All of the students who competed did a great job representing their schools!

“Each school had such great spirit!  It was a pleasure having them come to BGAHS. We look forward to hosting this event again next year!” said Sister Cynthia Babyak.

Each event of the competition had three team winners. The overall school team winners were: St. James School of Woodbridge in 1st place; Immaculate Conception School of Spotswood in 2nd place; and St. John Vianney School of Colonia in 3rd place.
