Weather Couldn't Stand in the Way of Hoops for Heart

A March snowstorm might have gotten in the way of this year’s Hoops for Heart, but nothing was going to stop Bishop Ahr High School from holding this exciting event. For the 10th year, this basketball fundraiser took place, featuring BGA faculty and alumni playing against members of the BGA boys and girls basketball teams to a cheering crowd of students, parents, staff, and alumni.

It was a close contest all the way to the last minutes, with a final score of Faculty/Alumni 61 to Students 55. Joining the faculty team were 20 BGA alumni, including referees Mike Perullo ’80 and Clem Bottone ‘86. The announcer for the game was Freshmen Boys Basketball Coach Mr. Rocky Prosdocimo and the scorekeeper was Athletic Director Mr. Mike Wolfthal. Alumnus Mark Celis ’12 provided the official basketball music on his keyboard during the game.

Of course, the true purpose of the game was to raise funds for the great work that the American Heart Association does in fighting heart disease. The over $4,000 raised through ticket sales, raffles, half-court shots, and food sales was donated directly to the American Heart Association of New Jersey.

Helping put together this event was CSAC Hoops 4 Heart chairwoman Leslie Lopez ’18, who shouldered a large part of the planning responsibilities. Members of the CSAC Hoops 4 Heart committee and Sister Cynthia Marie Babyak worked diligently on making this charity basketball game an overwhelming success.

Half-time proved to be just as exciting as the game with a record-breaking five successful half-court shots by faculty member Joseph Vigilante, Simon Llaguno ’18 (one-handed), Mark Celis ’12, Tom Weiller ‘15, and Alex Santiago ‘18.

Thank you to the faculty, alumni, parents, and BGA students who played and worked the event! And thank you to all who came out and supported this great cause!
