Bishop Ahr High School Walks Out for Peace

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead

I am so amazed and proud that we took part in this walkout. I want to take a moment to thank you all. I want to take a moment to remember the 17 beautiful souls we are honoring.

Some say school shootings have become a norm in today’s society.  If that’s true, then it’s our job to change that. The fact that this is a national movement, led by students our age, led by students who were victims of terror, led by students who could have been us, shows that the we are the change we wish to see in the world.

We should not have to worry about being shot at school.  We cannot let ourselves believe that nothing can be done just because we are not yet considered “adults.”  Everything can be done. I hope from participating in this walkout that you have realized this. I hope that you have realized the power of your voice and that age does not limit you.

We have the right to life, we also have the right to an education, and it is not just that right is being cut short. Whether you are a student, a teacher, part of the faculty, administration, a coach, a club moderator, a substitute, or a member of the staff, you deserve to come here every day and not have to fear a school shooting.

I am surrounded by bright minds with bright futures ahead. I am surrounded by future leaders, CEOs, doctors, scientists, and artists. I am surrounded by the teachers who inspire us to pursue those dreams.  None of this can happen if our lives and academic careers are cut short because of violence in schools.

I want to once again thank you for all your support.  And remember, we are the future, and the future is ours.
